About Cat Ranks

We build software,
so we know how to judge it.

Cat Ranks is an operator-published tool lab and maker-owned free-tool directory. The same operator builds and maintains a handful of free online tools. Shipping a product is what teaches you where a tool quietly succeeds or fails.

Who we are

A team that actually ships software

Reviewing a piece of software and running one in production are two different things. We do both. We build and maintain real online tools ourselves — each doing a single job well — and that hands-on experience is what earns us the right to review: we know exactly what it feels like to upload a file, run a workflow end to end, and handle the awkward edge cases.

Most of the tools we build run locally in your browser and never upload your files — which is also how we think about your data.

How we review

What we actually look at

A product's own site shows you only the side it wants you to see. We fill in the rest — the hard facts that decide whether you should buy:

  • Real pricing, including renewal and lifetimeThe first-year promo price isn't the one that bites — the second-year renewal is. We track what you actually pay over time: intro price, renewal, whether a lifetime deal exists, and whether the free tier is genuinely usable.
  • Cons on every productNo software is perfect. Every review states the downsides and who it's wrong for — a review with only pros is no review at all.
  • Pricing verified against official sources, and date-stampedSoftware prices drift. We check pricing against each product's official site and stamp every page with an “updated” date. If something's gone stale, tell us.
  • Who it’s for, not “the best”There's no universal number one. We spell out who each tool fits and who it doesn't — the right pick for a solo blogger and a hundred-person team was never going to be the same.
Ownership and funding

Who owns the tools, and how we make money

Up front: some outbound links are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we earn a commission — at no extra cost to you. We mark every one of those links sponsored. That's how we keep the lights on and how these tools stay genuinely free.

Cat Ranks and tools labeled as built by us share an operator. Owned tools are eligible for our directories and roundups.

Ownership and ranking are separate disclosures: owned tools are labeled, while rankings reflect fit rather than payouts. A higher commission does not buy a higher spot — and some tools we genuinely recommend have no affiliate program at all. We recommend them anyway. Simply put: we only recommend tools we'd use ourselves.

Our promise

Four lines that won't move

  • Honesty over hypeWe tell you what's good and what isn't — no cheerleading.
  • Cons always shownEvery review states the downsides and who it's wrong for.
  • No fake urgencyNo fake countdowns, no “only 1 seat left” theatrics.
  • Privacy-respectingOur tools are mostly local-first and never upload your files — they're yours.

Spotted a price change, or something wrong?

Software changes daily and we're not immune to mistakes. If you find a price that's out of date, a fact that's off, or a product that behaves differently now — tell us. We'll verify and update it, and the “updated” date on the page will move with it.

You can use the free-tool finder or email us directly to reach the team.
