The Best Free Mockup Generators, with Official Sources

Record date 2026-07-11

For quick device-frame and screenshot mockups, the best free option is shapecat (which we build): it frames your screenshot or puts your design into a mockup in your browser, free, no watermark. Placeit publishes product and lifestyle scenes; Canva Mockups covers apparel, print, website, app, and device-screen mockups. Check each official page for current access and export terms.

"Free mockup generator" hides a common bait-and-switch: you design the perfect t-shirt or app-store shot, then discover the clean export is behind a subscription, or the free download carries a watermark. The honest questions are: can you export at full quality for free, is there a watermark, and how broad is the template library. We build a mockup tool, so here's the comparison without the upsell fog.

Evidence and scope

This retained comparison is a starting point, not a current end-to-end test. An official-source link supports its adjacent dated note; it does not prove the present export quality, price or device behavior.

Ranking policy: fit determines the order, commissions do not, and operator ownership is disclosed wherever it applies.

FAQ

Are free mockup generators really free, or free-to-preview?
It varies, and that's the catch. Some let you export a clean, full-quality image for free; others let you design and preview for free but gate the watermark-free download behind a paid plan. Before investing time in a template, check whether the export — at the resolution you need, without a watermark — is actually free.
What's the difference between a device mockup and a product mockup?
A device mockup drops your screenshot into a phone, laptop or browser frame — ideal for app and web listings. A product mockup places your design onto a physical item (t-shirt, mug, poster) in a styled photo — ideal for print-on-demand and merch. Some tools specialize in one; big libraries try to cover both.
Will a mockup export have a watermark?
On free tiers, sometimes yes — it's the most common way free mockup tools push you to pay. A genuinely free export has no watermark and full resolution. Always confirm by doing one real export before you build a workflow around a tool.
